Fat Man-child Speaks out About Obesity
I’ve never been a fan of public health announcements because of their inability to effect change. This ad however caught my attention as it embodies in my opinion the state of our global community. Sedentary youth, and a lack of proper nutrition is putting a strain on our society with no observable signs of change on the horizon.
Ads like this also leave the door wide open for criticism…..
At one point in the ad the boy proclaims that he doesn’t want to look like this (meaning obese). The body image and self esteem police are all over this. I understand the notion that people should be happy with their body, but it’s becoming an easy cop out for putting forth an effort to get healthy.
Obesity plays are large role in many of the conditions that are burdening our health care system, so I think ads like this are fair game.
While I’m not a big fan of these campaigns I think this one is spot on and if viewed by the right people could effect change. I give it two thumbs up!
Will ads like this motivate kids to exercise?
What do you think about this Ad?
Hmm, I don’t think a public service announcement will grab the attention span of a child. The thing is that it is very difficult to have a child or teen think in the long term. It’s hard for adults as well.
The thing is unless adults teach their children the value of staying fit odds are the child will not follow suit. So in the end we still have to target our efforts with the adult population and educate them as well.

Sam,
I think this ad is great if the right people view it. Like you said, and I can attest to, teens (children) have a very short attention span and a general inability to think long term.
I think this ad would produce the best results if parents of young children were to view it. They should really question how their choices impact their children’s environment, and ask themselves…”How can I set my child up for a long healthy life?”
