Top 10 Most Annoying People at The Gym

Annoying can still be cute in a 1980′s sort of way……….

I have been meaning to post about this topic for a while, and wouldn’t you believe it somebody really annoyed me at the gym today.  I choose not to vent on this site because I am an extremely positive person, and believe in the power of positive thinking, but sometimes we need to change it up, so here it goes.

So I have started to train my wife at the gym, and during this time one of the personal trainers at the facility has been hounding my wife to sign up for ”personal training” sessions.   I understand this, but there are better ways to approach this than cornering her at every turn.

Today after our strength training session my wife and I went upstairs to complete some ab work.  During this time the trainer came over and made a few comments to my wife, thinking I couldn’t hear what was being said.  I did the old turn down the volume on my head phones trick.  I couldn’t believe what I heard.  She told my wife that she should book her next session asap because the workout she was doing under “my” instruction was all wrong.  She told her that she will teach her to work out like a woman, and that is the problem when men try to teach their wives what to do.  Let me tell you it took a lot of strength to be quiet.   I could have crushed her with theory in an instant, but I bit my tongue.

I wasn’t as much offended as upset for my wife who is embarking on a new workout routine.  The last thing you should do to someone who is starting out is discourage them.  It’s not as if I personally designed the program for my wife anyway.  Kayla is following the Visual Impact for Women Program that was designed by Rusty Moore of Fitness Black Book, hardly an amateur fitness buff, with a wealth of personal training experience and millions of visitors to his website.   I can’t wait until Kayla is finished the program and goes back to the trainer to show off her new body!  Anyway…enough of that here is the Top 10 Most Annoying People at the Gym!

10.  People That Leave A Puddle of Sweat At The Bench  -  Just gross.

9.  People That Stare Intensely At Themselves In The Mirror – The same people may even throw in a wink and gun (to themselves).

8.  People That Never Stop Talking, Or Try To Talk To You While You Have Headphones On – Somehow you can hear their conversation over your music

7.  People That Try To Correct Your Form – About the only thing worse is someone trying to give golf swing tips during a round of golf.

6.  People That Lift Extremely Low Weights For Like 5000 Reps – Sometimes they will break to answer their cell phone.

5.  People That Ask You To Spot Them, And Then Try To Lift Way Too Much Weight – This really puts you on the “spot”, and makes for an uncomfortable situation with a person you may have just met…AWKWARD.

4.  Muscle Shirts – AKA – The wife beater is just unnecessary.

3.  People With Bad Odor– Nuff Said.

2.  People That Leave Weights All Over The Place – Seriously, people do this which creates an uneeded obstable course at the gym.

1.  People That Do Ab Work For Like 10 Hours But Never Do Cardio – That is the fastest way to end up hurt OR fat!

  • I love the pic and agree with the list 100%! Also I love it when female trainers try to trick women into training with them saying they will train them like a women should.

    • Louis,
Thanks for your thoughts. It is crazy what people will fall for.
I can understand that a woman might be more comfortable being trained by a woman, but just becuase you are a female trainer doesn’t mean you are more qualified to train women. Just like a female trainer could train a man equally as well as a male trainer.

  • yeah I get annoyed too so i train at 5.00 am when there are very few people around. At 5pm all the ‘beautiful’ people start to turn up and it just becomes ‘The Situation’ gone very wrong!

I’m sure your wife will do very well on that program it looks like a real winner!

I think we are going to adjust our training times for that reason alone! AS for my wife, Kayla is already seeing and feeling results after two weeks. She pulled off her first bench press, and skull crushers!. I’m really excited for her.

  • I can’t stand predatory trainers. I can see offering to help someone who is lost and confused at they gym, but to barge in like that when she’s training with a spouse is just rude.

I like your list. I’m afraid those annoying people are not confined to your gym, because I also deal with them every day. I feel your pain. It makes you grateful for all the “normal” people at the gym who are not so annoying. I’m sure your wife will make great progress with Rusty’s program.

I have some close friends that are shy to comment on this blog (don’t know why!!), but they loved your comment here.
They have seen the predatory trainer in action and hate the feeling of being watched.

  • Man, this list is funny. Unfortunately it is very true. It’s almost like there’s an epidemic of annoying behavior at gyms and it only multiplies.

Along with Number 6- endless number of reps I would add anyone doing endless number of sets. I’m always thinking, “please do less and you will look better!” I just don’t say anything because I don’t want to be annoying…

And about the trainer hassling your wife. She needs to act like a trainer and less like a used car salesperson.

  • Jordan,

This list is actually one of the main reasons I started doing the majority of my training at home. Can’t wait for your wife to show up that trainer after completing VI for Women!

I started doing a lot of training outdoors, but we are in the middle of a deep freeze up here, so I’ll have to wait until spring to get more out of my at home workouts.

Kayla loves reading these comments. It is giving her confidence and support!

  • With the exception of the dude in the green shorts… I am totally there. If any of these trainers are “predatory”, I would seal-the-deal by rubbing down in deers blood!!! HOLLA back at ya Jordan! PEACE.

Thanks for sharring your thoughts. You know I’m a bit squeamish when it comes to blood, otherwise I may try something that extreme!

  • Sometimes the actions of trainers in those gym make it almost an embarrassment to tell people that I’m a trainer. I’m glad I never worked in any of the commercial gyms and just trained people in my house. Great list Jordan.:)

    • Mike,
I am thinking about doing some selective personal training, because I really like being part of change (especially in others).
I have contemplated getting certified but I just don’t think training in a commercial gym is worth it, nor do I fit the mold of the “typical” trainer from what I have seen.
Glad to hear you do your training at home!

  • I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry reading this! Its so true. The puddle of sweat thing really gets my goat. Why am I the only person in the gym with a towel? Oh and of course the people trying to talk to you when you’re training. I remember being on the shoulder press machine and a guy interrupted me to ask me what I was training! Wow.

Anyways I’ve been training at home since October too and I haven’t missed any of this craziness yet :-)

    • Michael,
That is funny, but a lot of people aren’t too sure what to do in the gym. He could have at least waited until you were finished your set!
The truth is that he probably liked the way you looked and wanted some tips!

I am definately planning on trying the home gym idea, when I get the space.

Thanks for leaving a comment. I think it’s great that you are wearing a wife beater, as long as you wear something else to the gym!

However, are you seriously for real concerning the ‘wife beater’ ?
Training singlets are 100% ok to use in the gym (unless they are spaghetti-strapped ones THEN I agree with you.
T-shirts can be restrictive and also cause you to sweat profusely.

    Just sayin…

    • Jim,
Thanks for the comment. I am talking mostly about co-ed gyms. I don’t think everyone appreciates muscle heads pumping iron in wife beaters. Just going on some of the comments I have heard from women mostly.
      Nothing wrong with sweating.
If you wear the right t-shirts, they aren’t that restrictive.

  • Totally!! My brother is one of those people who stare at themselves while they lift and it drives me crazy. Swear to god, I have seen him wink more than once, haha. Needless to say, I don’t go to the gym with him all that often anymore. I do have a question, though. You said your wife was doing the Visual Impact program? How did that work for her? Did she enjoy it and did she like the results it produced? I’ve been looking into it for a while, but I can’t seem to find any reviews from people who’ve actually been through the program.
    Thanks!

    • Sierra,
I see those people all the time!!! Can’t blame them really…some of them look pretty good! My wife did use the Visual Impact program for a short time, but then stopped….(she’s not proud of that). When she did the workout, she enjoyed it, and achieved noticeable results after only 6 weeks. I think the best way to approach this workout is with the mindset that weight training will really help you long term and ultimately burn calories at a greater rate, due to increased muscle, and decreased body fat. Let me know how it goes!

      Cheers,
      Jordan
