How To Make Your Own Coconut Milk

In a previous post we discussed our 5 favourite foods for life, where I professed my love for coconut milk.  Having purchased canned coconut milk a number of times at the grocery store, I figured a cheaper  alternative had to exist. Thanks to some quick internet research, I now make my own coconut milk at home as a cost efficient option that tastes equally delicious!   Here is a short video explaining how to make your own coconut milk.

[Coconut milk goes great with shakes and curries!  Improve your health, and save money by learning how to make your own........]

Materials

  • 8”-8” piece of cheesecloth
  • Blender
  • Measuring Cups
  • Storage container with lid (I use a Nalgene water bottle)

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsweetened coconut flakes (medium or large)
  • 1 cup of water (warm or boiled)

Instructions

  • Measure one cup of water and ½ cup of coconut flakes
  • Place both ingredients in a blender
  • Mix for 2-5 seconds
  • Pour contents of blender through cheesecloth and into storage container
  • Be sure to squeeze all the liquid out of the cheesecloth
  • Take remaining coconut flakes from cheesecloth and place back in the blender
  • Repeat the cycle over again while reusing the coconut flakes and adding new water each time

You can repeat this cycle up to 5 times, producing close to 5 cups of coconut milk for the cost of a ½ cup of coconut flakes!

Storage Considerations

  • Store coconut milk in the fridge
  • Make sure your storage container has a tight lid
  • Try to consume coconut milk in the next 7 days

Good luck!  I hope this helps you on your weight loss journey!

    Jordan,

Really cool coconut milk recipe! Would you use this for shakes instead of like yogurt also what are some of your shake ideas…i hate yogurt and am extremely picky but i really want to try this primal stuff out since it seemed to work so well for you! I love coconut so that seems to be a good start….

jordan.. i was looking into coconut milk and things after i read your post and watched the video and i found that the excess coconut that you have in the cheese cloth after using can be drained and dried out…you put it in the oven for i think 20 mins the pulse it in the food processor and you have coconut flour…i figured you get more bang for you buck this way!

      Kristen,
That is a great. Thanks for contributing your ideas! I will definately give this a try next time. There is no point in being wasteful, and coconut flour is great for other primal treats.

Hey Jordan, this is exactly how we make this when I used to live in the Philippines :) It’s a lot of work and for a busy gal like me, I like the ready made ones…haha. I absolutely love coconut milk in my shakes. It tastes creamy and sweet. I always have a can or two a week so I can get my healthy fats.

      Anna,
Thanks for visiting this site. I agree, it is a great way to consume healthy fats! Having coconut milk on hand is easy with the ready made ones, and equally as healthy. I keep the canned variety of coconut milk around as well. I usually try to make my own when I am less busy, and most motivated!

Jordan I have actually made coconut milk just as you describe, but I still buy canned coconut milk too as I get and excellent quality organic one for less than 2 euro (I’m Irish).

I LOVE coconut milk! In fact I love coconut milk, coconut oil, coconut water, flakes…you get the idea, haha. It’s so good for you.

I use coconut milk in homemade curries, in sweet potato soup (tastes so good). I’m gonna try it in shakes now (Thanks Anna).

    Great video!

      David,
Thanks for the comment. I am just one of the millions of people that love all things coconut, and am always looking for more ways to fit them into my diet. I’m still working on my camera skills, but I know that will improve with time, thanks for making me feel good about my 2nd attempt on screen . 2 euro is pretty good for a can of organic coconut milk, good for you!

      Cheers,
      Jordan

I not only “Liked” this pin, I also tried it. :-) I used the meat from a whole coconut, and added the coconut water to the mix and got four cups out of the whole deal, but my milk is more of a translucent light brown rather than white. Is that just the effect of using real coconut and its water or did it go wrong somehow? when i mix it in the blender it goes white again and it tastes ok…
I really hope I didn’t mess up a perfectly good coconut somehow. I’m also drying out the pulp and want to toast it so I can sprinkle it on something for extra yummy goodness.

      Margie,
Thanks for adding to the discussion! I think your solution is fine. It is most likely brown because you used the meat of the coconut. I hope you find creative ways to make use of the yummy goodness you’ve created.

      Cheers,
      Jordan

Haven’t tried this yet, but I plan to…

One thing though, the video shows him using hot water from the tap… I would recommend never doing this. Even if your home doesn’t have lead pipes, or copper pipes that used lead solder, hot water leaches other metals out of pipes, hot water tanks, etc that can be harmful when consumed.

When using for cooking/drinking, always use cold water and heat as needed.
